Did you know that 20% of the population experiences some form of dental trauma every year? Dental emergencies can happen any time or any place, and they often occur when we least expect them. However, things can become quite complicated when they unfold during summer vacation! But there’s nothing you need to worry about; knowing how to handle a dental emergency when you’re away from home will go a long way towards ensuring that your smile doesn’t suffer any serious long-term damage. Here are some tips from your dentist for dealing with dental emergencies during summer vacation.

Common Dental Emergencies You Might Encounter

There are many things out there that can damage your mouth, but some of the most common ones that you might encounter during the summer include:

  • Toothaches and hypersensitivity.
  • Chipped, cracked, or fractured teeth.
  • Displaced teeth.

Even though these injuries typically involve physical trauma, it is important to note that there are other types of emergencies that can occur without bodily injury. Even poor oral care can translate into gum disease and other problems that are considered urgent.

Preparing For Dental Emergencies During Summer Vacation

When it comes to handling dental emergencies, the best thing you can do is simply try to prevent them from happening in the first place! Even though this isn’t always possible, there are many things you can do to be prepared in case something does happen. Consider the following:

  • Have an emergency kit ready to go – This doesn’t have to be anything fancy or expensive, but at least include items like gauze, over-the-counter painkillers, dental wax, and a small container for displaced teeth. This kit can make a huge difference during a dental emergency!
  • Research local dentists – If you’re able to find a local dentist in your destination before arriving there, you already know exactly where to go during an emergency.
  • Schedule a dental appointment beforehand – It never hurts to schedule one of your biannual dental visits before leaving for vacation. Your dentist could catch something before it has the chance to develop into an emergency!
  • Practice good oral hygiene – Whether you’re at home or in a hotel, you should take care of your mouth. Regularly brush and floss your teeth to help prevent oral health problems from turning into dental emergencies.

What To Do If You’ve Suffered a Dental Emergency

If you suffer a dental emergency during summer vacation, it needs to be addressed immediately, even if you think it can wait. Inaction usually makes matters worse! If you have travel insurance, you can contact a local dentist who will be able to see you either immediately or whenever necessary. You might also need to visit an emergency room, depending on the injury. Of course, you should always contact your primary dentist back home and inform them of the situation. They will likely want to see you once you’re back.

Even though there’s no opportune time for dental emergencies, there are luckily a lot of things you can do to be prepared for one; even if you’re on summer vacation. Talk with your dentist if you have questions about dental emergencies and how to properly address them.
