The pain can sometimes be so intense that it can keep you awake, and without the distractions of day-to-day life, that can make it feel even worse. If you’re experiencing a toothache and can’t get your much-needed shuteye, here are some tips to help you finally get the rest you deserve.

Elevate Your Head

If you’re experiencing a toothache at bedtime, make sure you call your dentist as soon as they open in the morning for an emergency appointment. In the meantime, try to get some rest. If possible, lie down with your head elevated so your blood doesn’t rush to your head. When this happens, it can intensify the pain in your tooth and prevent you from falling asleep.

Try OTC Medication

If you are in severe pain, try taking an over-the-counter pain medicine and see if that helps. Keep in mind that even if it does, you should still contact your dentist as soon as possible. Do not rely on taking pain medicine to “wait it out” as toothaches rarely get better on their own, and it is not advisable to take pain medicine (even OTC) for an extended period of time.

Watch Your Diet

If possible, avoid eating acidic, cold, or hard foods right before you head to bed, as these can aggravate your toothache and make the pain worse right as you’re supposed to be relaxing. Furthermore, avoid chewing on the side of the mouth with the aching tooth if possible.

Rinse with Mouthwash

Even if you’re not a regular mouthwash user, it can come in handy if you have a toothache because the alcohol can both numb and disinfect your teeth as you swish. You can also try using a solution of warm or room-temperature saltwater to help keep your mouth clean if it hurts too much to brush.

Remember, it is important to contact your dentist as soon as possible if you are experiencing a toothache that lasts more than 24 hours; however, if you find yourself struggling to sleep due to pain, try these tips to get some much-needed relief and some even more important rest!

About Dr. Her

Dr. Shue Her knows that when it comes to your oral health, accidents happen.
