Getting All-on-4 dental implants can be an exciting step toward a more comfortable, functional smile. But before your procedure, it is worth thinking about what happens afterward, too. Your mouth will need time to heal, and that means making some temporary changes to the foods and drinks you consume.
Knowing what to have on hand before surgery can make those first few days much easier. Here is what you should know about eating and drinking during your All-on-4 recovery.
What Should I Eat After All-on-4 Surgery?
Immediately after surgery, your mouth may be tender, swollen, or sensitive. Your dental provider will give you specific instructions based on your procedure, but soft foods are generally easier to eat during the initial healing period.
Before surgery, consider stocking your refrigerator and pantry with foods that require little to no chewing. Options may include:
- Smoothies without seeds or hard pieces
- Yogurt and applesauce
- Mashed potatoes
- Scrambled eggs
- Oatmeal or other soft grains
- Soups and broths that have been cooled to a comfortable temperature
- Soft pasta
- Cottage cheese
- Pureed fruits and vegetables
As your mouth heals, you can gradually transition toward foods with more texture according to your dentist’s instructions. Even if you start feeling better quickly, avoid rushing back to your usual diet before your provider says it is safe.
What Foods Should I Avoid?
Some foods can irritate your healing mouth or place unnecessary pressure on your implants and surrounding tissues. During the early recovery period, avoid hard, crunchy, sticky, or chewy foods unless your dental provider specifically tells you they are appropriate.
That means putting foods such as popcorn, nuts, chips, hard candies, tough meats, and raw crunchy vegetables on hold for the time being. You should also avoid biting directly into hard foods, which can put additional pressure on your healing mouth.
Your provider will let you know when you can begin introducing different foods again. Follow those instructions carefully, even if a particular food seems easy to chew.
What Can I Drink After Surgery?
Staying hydrated is an important part of recovery, so keep plenty of water available. Cool or room-temperature water can be especially comfortable when your mouth is tender.
For the first part of your recovery, your dentist may recommend avoiding very hot beverages. You should also follow any instructions regarding alcohol and other beverages that could interfere with healing or medications.
If you are drinking smoothies, remember not to use a straw unless your dental provider specifically approves it. The suction created by straws can be problematic after certain oral procedures.
Will Eating Be Uncomfortable?
Some tenderness and discomfort are normal after All-on-4 surgery. Swelling and sensitivity may also make eating feel different than usual for a little while. Choosing soft foods and taking small bites can make mealtimes more comfortable.
Your dental team may also provide instructions for managing discomfort and keeping your mouth clean during the healing process. Follow these directions closely, and contact your provider if you experience unexpected or worsening symptoms.
When Can I Return to My Normal Diet?
There is no single timeline that works for everyone. Your recovery will depend on factors such as your procedure, your overall oral health, and how your mouth heals.
Your dental provider will tell you when it is safe to progress your diet. Even once you can eat more normally, you may need to continue avoiding particularly hard or sticky foods for a period of time.
A little preparation can make your recovery much smoother. By having plenty of soft, nutritious foods and drinks ready before your procedure, you can focus on healing instead of worrying about what is for dinner.
